Clandeboye Lodge can host very large weddings, so the key for a smaller one is picking the right room. The Blackwood suite, with its arched timber beams and gothic windows, takes intimate receptions of up to 60, which makes it the space to ask about for a guest list of 50 or under. The Sheridan is a contemporary room with a covered terrace and firepit that works well for pre-dinner drinks, and the hotel only ever hosts one wedding a day.

The venue is licensed for a range of ceremonies, so you can marry and celebrate in the same place. Outdoor ceremonies take place in the landscaped gardens, with indoor rooms ready if the weather turns. Dogs are welcome at the ceremony and drinks reception, though they need to leave before the meal begins.

Meals are served silver service rather than as a buffet, and the kitchen handles vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free needs. There is no preferred supplier list, so you are free to bring your own band, DJ or string quartet, and the bar and entertainment licence runs to 1am, or midnight on a Sunday. If the two of you do not drink, or many of your guests do not, there is an alcohol-free package.

For staying over, the hotel has 41 bedrooms including three suites, and packages include reduced rates on eight rooms for guests. A dressing room suite with daylight and a private terrace is there for getting ready. Weekday dates open up the most choice for small groups: several packages run Sunday to Thursday, including a winter option from November to March, and a short-notice package covers dates within the next six months. The hotel sits just outside Bangor in County Down, a short drive from Belfast, with plenty of free parking on site.
