Millbrook has been running elopements since 2011, and everything about it is shaped around the very smallest weddings. You can come as just the two of you or bring up to four guests, and the Summerhouse where you marry seats about six. It is a licensed space, so the ceremony is legally binding. It is also yours alone until 4pm, with only one wedding hosted each day. If you are thinking about a slightly bigger group, the estate points couples to its sister venue, which takes up to 14.

The legal side is straightforward but needs a little lead time. A registrar from Devon Registration Service conducts the ceremony, and you give notice at your own local register office at least 29 days beforehand. If you are not bringing anyone, staff will happily act as your witnesses at no extra cost. Even so, the team says weddings can often be arranged within about five weeks of first getting in touch.

Rather than a formal wedding breakfast, the food here leans towards afternoon or cream tea, sharing boards, grazing tables and canapés in the Summerhouse, with private dining for up to six. There are also good local restaurants a short drive away, and the team can help you book a table for the evening.

Packages include a stay in one of the estate's five self-catering cottages, so the whole party can stay on site, and many couples book two or three nights. Rose Cottage sleeps four and has its own hot tub, and two of the properties take dogs, who are welcome to join the ceremony. The 32 acres of meadow, lake and woodland are yours for photographs, and you can feed the alpacas on the day. Winter packages run from November to January, with the log fire lit in the Summerhouse. One practical tip: the postcode does not lead straight to the gate, so share the venue's directions with guests.
