The Waterfoot is a 44-bedroom hotel on the edge of Derry, around five minutes from the city centre by car, and it is licensed for both religious and non-religious marriage ceremonies as well as civil partnerships. That means you can hold the ceremony, the meal and the party in one place and walk upstairs to bed at the end of the night, which takes a lot of logistics out of the day.

The hotel's main suites are set up for weddings of up to 200, but for a smaller wedding the room to ask about is Studio 5, which the hotel suggests for more intimate ceremonies, and the brochure also lists Waterfoot 2 as a ceremony room. There is no set package for small weddings. Instead the wedding planner builds a bespoke one around your numbers, which is worth doing, as the standard evening packages are priced on the basis of 100 guests. The landscaped gardens are used for photographs and, when the weather allows, outdoor ceremonies.

Food is cooked in-house, with the head chef working with local suppliers. The wedding menu offers choices such as chicken supreme, salmon, sirloin of beef and beef daube, with vegan and vegetarian mains and a choice of desserts. The Platinum and Gold packages include a room for the two of you on the wedding night and an anniversary stay, and Platinum adds better room rates for your guests. Outside the wedding itself, the Wine Bar and Snug Bar keep things lively, with live music and cocktails.

One thing to bear in mind is that this is a working hotel, so ask whether other guests will be around on your date. On the plus side, parking is free and secure, and City of Derry Airport is a short drive away for anyone flying in.
