Anyone who has planned a small wedding knows the moment. You set a filter for intimate venues, the results come back and the third one on the list turns out to seat 220 with a dance floor, a mezzanine and a carvery. Intimate, in much of the wedding industry, is a mood word. It describes lighting, or a style of photography, or simply whatever the marketing team felt that morning. It rarely describes a number.

Littlewed was built on the opposite idea. This is a directory with one promise at its centre: every venue here is verified for weddings of 50 guests or fewer. Not tagged, not filtered, not self-declared. Verified, by a person, against what the venue itself publishes, before the listing ever appears. At the time of writing that means 481 venues across 107 counties of the UK and Ireland, every one of them carrying its real capacity and almost every one a real starting price.

Because we ask couples to trust that word on every page, we thought we should show our working. This is how verification on Littlewed actually happens, what we will not do for money and how to get the most out of a verified listing when you are planning your own day.

The Problem With "Intimate"

The big directories are built to be big. Their business is volume, so a venue that seats 200 has every reason to appear in the small wedding searches too, and the filters usually let it. The result is that couples planning a 30 guest wedding, which is almost exactly the average enquiry we see at Littlewed, spend their evenings reading about ballrooms.

The damage is subtle but real. A venue that can hold 180 will happily take your 35 guests, but the room rarely flatters them, the minimum spends are built for someone else's wedding and you spend your budget renting emptiness. The venues that are genuinely shaped for small parties, the converted mills, the walled gardens, the castles that sleep ten, get buried under listings with bigger advertising budgets.

So we made the cut ourselves, venue by venue. If a place cannot make a wedding of 50 or fewer feel like the point rather than the compromise, it does not go in the directory, whatever its budget.

What We Actually Check

Every listing on Littlewed starts with the venue's own published information, read by a person. Before a venue goes live we confirm five things: that it genuinely hosts intimate weddings, its capacity, its starting price, its ceremony arrangements and the practical details couples ask about first, meaning catering, accommodation and whether you get the place to yourselves.

The rule that shapes all of it is simple. We record what the venue says, not what would look tidy. If a venue holds 27 guests, the listing says 27, not "around 30". If a venue publishes no price, the price field stays blank rather than carrying our guess, because a blank is honest and a guess is a trap. Roughly 15 of every 100 venues we research publish no price at all, and we would rather show you that truthfully than invent a figure you will plan around.

The bar is real enough that plenty of venues do not clear it. In our most recent round of new listings we researched 42 candidate venues and added 30. The other 12 were not bad venues. We simply could not verify enough about their intimate wedding offer to stand behind a listing, and on Littlewed that is the whole test.

We record what the venue says, not what would look tidy. If a venue holds 27 guests, the listing says 27. If we cannot confirm a detail, the field stays blank rather than carrying our guess.

What a Verified Listing Looks Like

The easiest way to show the standard is to walk through it. Here is what verification produces, on real venues across all five countries we cover.

The capacity is the venue's own number

Roch Castle in Pembrokeshire is a restored 12th century Norman castle on a volcanic outcrop with views across St Brides Bay, and its listing says 30 guests because that is the intimate wedding the castle actually hosts. Not 40 because castles sound grand, not 25 to seem exclusive. Thirty.

Oxnead Hall in Norfolk sleeps 38 guests across the period buildings of its 600 year old estate, so its listing says 38. Odd, specific numbers are usually a sign a directory is telling the truth, because nobody invents a 38.

Glenpark Estate in County Tyrone sleeps up to 27 guests in its seven rooms at the foot of the Gortin Glens, and 27 is exactly what you will find on its listing.

The price is published, with its currency

The Barn at Tyrrellspass in Westmeath carries its real starting figure of €2,500, which is part of why it stands out among Ireland's intimate venues, and its ceremony space, bar and barn are recorded as the venue describes them.

Hampden House in the Chiltern Hills, a Grade I listed house with a 14th century church on the estate, lists from £4,000 with its licensed ceremony spaces confirmed. When you compare the two you are comparing real floors in real currencies, which is what makes a shortlist mean something.

The ceremony details are checked, not assumed

Springkell, a Palladian mansion six miles from Gretna Green, is licensed for civil, religious and humanist ceremonies, and its listing says so because the venue says so. What We Never Do

A directory earns trust as much by what it refuses as by what it checks, so it is worth being plain about the other side of the ledger.

No venue can pay its way into Littlewed. Listing is free for every verified venue, and money has never turned a rejection into a listing. Venues that want more visibility can join a paid membership, and we are open about that, but membership never lowers the verification bar and never adds a venue our checks would have kept out. The directory a paying venue joins is the same directory a free one does.

We take zero commission on bookings. When you enquire through Littlewed, your enquiry goes to the venue and the venue deals with you directly. Nobody adds a percentage to your bill for the introduction, which also means we have no incentive to push you toward expensive venues. A €2,500 barn and a £5,000 castle are worth exactly the same to us, which is to say nothing, which is how it should be.

And we do not write fiction. The descriptions on Littlewed are written by us from verified information, not paid for by venues, and we do not invent reviews, awards or superlatives. When a listing here calls a venue the only one of its kind, it is because we checked.

Verification Never Really Finishes

The honest caveat is that a directory is a photograph of a moving subject. Venues close, refurbish, change hands and change prices, and a listing verified in spring can drift from the truth by autumn. So the checking continues after a venue goes live. We correct county assignments when a venue turns out to sit on the wrong side of a border, we flag prices that turn out to be per head rather than a hire fee and we remove venues that stop taking weddings. How to Use a Verified Listing Well

Read capacity as a ceiling, not a target. A venue verified for 50 will usually be at its loveliest with fewer. Our guest list guide is the place to start if the number itself is still moving.

Treat "from" prices as the honest floor. The starting price tells you whether a venue belongs on your shortlist. Saturdays in June do not cost what Thursdays in November cost, so let the venue quote your actual date before you fall in love.

Ask about minimums early. Some venues set minimum guest numbers or minimum spends on intimate packages. A verified listing gets you to the right conversation faster, but the conversation still matters.

Confirm the legal ceremony piece. Rules differ sharply between England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, from licensed rooms to marry anywhere freedom.
