Hargate Hall is a historic country house venue set in over seven acres within Peak District National Park near Buxton. This family-run venue offers two licensed indoor rooms for civil ceremonies, plus an outdoor oak gazebo and summer house, all with stunning Derbyshire landscape views. With accommodation for up to 77 guests across 12 self-catering apartments, it's ideal for couples wanting their guests nearby. Hargate Hall runs on a do-it-yourself model, which makes it a good match for couples who like to shape every detail. The venue supplies the hall, the grounds and the beds, and you bring in your own caterers, drinks, suppliers and styling, with no fixed supplier list and no corkage on the weekend DIY package. If you would rather hand over the logistics, there is also an all-inclusive weekend where the team arranges the food and drink for you.

For 50 guests or fewer, the midweek package is the one to look at. It runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and gives you exclusive use of the building and grounds from 10am to midnight for up to 60 people, with an overnight stay available as an extra. The Main Hall is the room the venue points smaller weddings towards, and the building holds a full civil ceremony licence, with a local registrar officiating. The lounge and an outdoor pagoda are also listed as places for the ceremony or reception.

Weekend bookings take the whole house from 4pm on Friday until 10am on Monday, and twelve self-catering apartments sleep up to 77, so everyone can stay together. The house was begun in 1899 by Joseph Wainwright and finished under its next owner, Robert Whitehead, and keeps original features such as a grand wooden staircase running up through the building. Anthony and Julie Knox own and run it today, and it sits at Wormhill near Buxton, which is also the closest railway station.

A few practical points. The hall is well over a century old, with three steps at each entrance and no lift, though portable ramps can be provided and Welbeck, one of four ground-floor apartments, has wide doors and a wet room. Nothing can be pinned or taped to walls or woodwork when you decorate. Weekends tend to be booked solid, so viewings usually happen midweek, and if you want a marquee it is wise to book at least six months ahead.
