Kilmartin Castle is an award-winning, design-led 16th-century Scottish castle on the West Coast of Scotland, hosting intimate weddings for up to 20 guests. It helps to know how Kilmartin Castle sees itself: the owners are clear that it is not an event venue in the usual sense. You book the whole castle as a stay, with a minimum of three nights, and the wedding happens within that booking. Only the people staying can use the castle itself, so it suits a group of close family and friends who want to spend a few days together rather than a single big day with a stream of arrivals.

Inside, the five bedrooms each have a different character. The Snug sits on the ground floor under an original barrel-vaulted stone ceiling and suits anyone who would rather avoid stairs, while 1550 beside the grand hall has a canopy bed, a cast iron bath and a wood-burning stove. Carswell and Speel both have copper tubs big enough for two. For the meal, the castle dining room seats ten, and the glasshouse takes up to 20 including the two of you, which is where any group larger than ten will eat.

Scotland lets you marry almost anywhere, as long as a registered celebrant leads the ceremony, so couples here marry at or around the castle. You can book a registrar through Argyll and Bute Council or arrange a Humanist celebrant, and the team can put you in touch with chefs, florists, photographers and celebrants they know. Dogs are welcome to come too.

The glen around you holds hundreds of ancient monuments, from standing stones and burial cairns to the Iron Age fort at Dunadd, and the village pub is about three minutes away on foot. Oban is roughly 45 minutes by car and Glasgow is under two hours. One practical point: amplified music and fireworks are not allowed on the property, so plan for a fireside evening rather than a dance floor.
