Neidpath Castle is a romantic wedding venue nestled on a hillside above the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Neidpath is a real castle rather than a converted hotel, sitting about a mile west of Peebles above the Tweed with wooded hills all around. On your wedding day the castle is yours alone, and the old fabric is part of the fun: vaulted cellars, a well, battlements with views up the valley and a bar set in what used to be the guard house. If the weather is kind you can hold your ceremony outdoors in the grounds, and the castle team works with florists and caterers who know the building, or can point you to other suppliers if you have your own ideas.

Small numbers suit the place. Stone halls and candlelight feel warm and close with a few dozen guests, and the castle calls the setting especially lovely in autumn and past couples speak fondly of candlelit winter celebrations, so you are not tied to summer. The castle is open by appointment throughout the year, with occasional public tours if you want a first look before arranging a private visit.

Staying over is where Neidpath stands out. Queen Mary's Chamber, on the floor where Mary Queen of Scots stayed in 1563, is a room for two inside the castle with a four-poster, open fire and roll-top bath. Next door, the Barmkin cottage sleeps six and has its own garden by the river. A further group of properties on the nearby Barns Estate, a short drive away along a quiet private estate road, includes a small medieval tower and cottages in an old stable courtyard. Together the seven properties sleep around two dozen people, which can cover the wedding party and closest family.

Getting here is straightforward. Edinburgh is around 25 miles away and about 45 minutes by car, the airport is a similar drive and Glasgow is roughly an hour and a quarter. The 62 bus runs regularly from Edinburgh to Peebles. Capacity figures are not published online, so confirm your numbers with the office early.
