Weddings at The Yair are built around the grounds rather than the house's interiors. The classic format is a marquee pitched outside Yair House, with the riverside, the walled garden and the wider estate all available for the day. The walled garden works especially well for champagne and cocktails once the vows are done. The estate can host far larger events, so a group of thirty or forty will feel spacious and unhurried here.

Food, drink, music and the marquee itself are flexible. The family can point you towards suppliers they have worked with over the years, or you can bring in the people you have already chosen, which makes it a good fit if you want to shape the day yourselves. The estate's history is part of the setting: the current house was built in 1788 by Alexander Pringle of Whytbank, the three-arched Yair Bridge over the Tweed dates from around 1764 and the Thyne family have owned and run the place since 1940.

Staying on site is a real draw. The wedding page says four of the estate's holiday cottages can sleep up to 18 people between them, so your closest family can stay put without arranging transport home, and there is more accommodation in the surrounding towns and villages. Each cottage has its own kitchen and WiFi, there is a private tennis court and from April to September guests can fish for trout on the estate's own beat of the Tweed at no charge.

Practically, the estate sits about 35 miles from Edinburgh and roughly ten minutes by car from the nearest railway station, with mountain biking at Glentress and the Southern Upland Way close by. A caveat worth noting: the site does not spell out ceremony arrangements, minimum numbers or which months marquees are offered, so raise those directly when you arrange a visit.
